Common styles of brochure explained.

Brochures don't just have to be sheets of paper folded in half. This article explains what some of the more common styles of brochure are.

Back Pocket Folder:

Unsurprisingly, the clue’s in the name – it really is a folder, and there is indeed a back pocket. But what its name lacks in inventiveness, it makes up for in spades in versatility. Giving you the ability to provide that truly bespoke touch to your audience with the total freedom in what they can contain within each pack. So, if you have all manner of essential things to get across, this is an easy way of ensuring they all get there.

Map Style Brochure:

Despite mobiles and sat navs revolutionising the way we navigate, we can all remember the distinct joy (and often frustration) that folded maps used to bring. But folding maps was only the beginning of what this design offered. As a brochure, it provides a myriad of ways of presenting a message. While still also offering something familiar, and not a million miles removed from other more common brochure styles.

Complex Folded Leaflet:

It’s actually less ‘complex’ and more ‘bold’, but unfortunately, we didn’t name them. Taking all the potential of the Map style brochure’s folds, and adding more folds you gain an almost limitless potential to what can be done with it (that’s just maths). From panels and posters, to whatever you can imagine and beyond, they’re a beautiful, fascinating and tactile way of bringing your brochures to life.

Cheque Book Style:

It’s just a fancy name for a fancy standard brochure. The same in structure and design, it’s the shape that offers the difference. The shape offers the benefit of adding in vouchers and placing the brochure in a pocket; it’s also cheaper to post. And it’s amazing what an impact such a little change can have with audiences. It may be little, but it’s also a little more exciting. Offering all the structure and format benefits of a standard brochure, while giving you the opportunity to stand out.

Brochure and Folder:

Somethings have to be said, every time. That’s where the brochure comes in. But what to do about the other things, those extra bits and bobs you want to add for one audience, and those bobs and bits for the others, and so forth. Now, can you guess what the folder might be for? This design is perfect for adding any inserts, or specific documents and products you want to include.

Standard Brochure:

With so many different styles on offer, standard really means simplicity. It just opens, like a small booklet. You can have as many or as few pages as you like. It might not look as exciting or as glamorous as some of the others, but its simplicity offers a structure and format that all audiences will understand immediately. Which for more detailed brochures can be invaluable.

Z-fold Brochure:

According to Dr Suess, Z stands for Zoom. Now he might not have had the design of the Z-fold brochure in mind, but the simplicity of the Z fold’s design seems to offer just that. Its brilliance and usefulness come from the fact that it just opens, you don’t really have to do anything. But this isn’t to sell it short; it is still extremely versatile, it just comes with the bonus of no fuss. Leaving you to focus on the design and content, without worrying about whether the audience will be able to follow it.

Roll Fold Brochure:

Slightly misleading name, as it doesn’t actually roll, but it does rock (apologies for the awful pun). What it does is open out on itself, offering audiences a type of reveal, and giving you the opportunity to position your message in a far more tantalising and intriguing manner. Its relatively simple design is built on a single sheet of paper but manages to provide different opportunities to present a message, through its many sides and hidden elements. This simple design also offers just that, without the need to resort to more elaborate and technical ways of gaining such impact.

Back Pocket Brochure:

The classier cousin of both the Standard and Back Pocket Folder, it is, in fact, a hybrid of the two. Offering all the benefits of both. Where the class comes from, that’s a mystery, but it’s there. Used across every industry, it allows for an unbelievable amount of flexibility in what you can present, giving you the option to display your message however you want it. Designed to your exact requirements, you can have your cake and eat it with all the scope that this style of brochure offers.

Wallet Brochure:

The ‘upmarket’ member of the brochure world. The Wallet brochure gives you a way to impress, by delivering a real feeling of quality. There’s something about receiving this package that makes an impression, and first impressions are so important. As to what that first impression looks like is up to you, as the Wallet brochure can be extraordinarily flexible in size, shape and what you can fit in them.

These are simply some of the most popular types of brochures. But with a little imagination, absolutely anything is possible.
